I moved through the crowd, but the first bell beeped letting everyone know it was time to get to class. Damn. Not enough time.

“Greg!” I shouted.

He paused and looked slightly over his shoulder. His face scrunched up in confusion. Like he almost recognized his name. Almost, but not quite.

“Greg! It’s Gwen! I need to talk to you!”

“Why is he ignoring you?” Stacy asked, sounding genuinely confused.

“Because there’s a very good chance that’s not Greg,” I said.

“Seriously?” she asked. “Is this like a necromancer thing or something?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “All I do know is I don’t like what’s happening here, and I really don’t like what I saw that necromancer doing with your body last night. It was like you were a puppet or something.”

“So you’re saying he might be under the necromancer’s control?” Stacy asked. “If he is then could he see other ghosts?”

Almost on cue a weeping girl stepped out of the walls clutching books to her chest. I knew her only by sight, but it looked like whatever had happened to her in the past hadn’t been a terribly pleasant experience.

Also? Greg totally stopped as though to give her some space when she floated in front of him.

“I’d say that’s a definite yes,” I said.

“Damn,” Stacy said.

“You’re damn right,” I said. “Now let’s go see what the hell is going on here.”

I was careful as I approached him. I thought about everything we’d seen the night before. How that strange ghostly procession had been walking around that property like a parade of the damned or something.

It wasn’t the kind of thing that made me feel all warm and fuzzy about approaching my friend. Not when I knew he was probably under the control of that necromancer. Not when I figured there was a very good chance that his soul had been sucked into that staff.

I caught up with him. He seemed to be walking on a very bad autopilot that kept bumping him into people rushing to get to class before the final tone. As though whatever was controlling him was having trouble getting used to the hustle and bustle of a high school.

I grabbed him by the arm and pulled him into a door off to the side. It turned out to be leading into the men’s room, but the bell had already beeped which meant anyone who was in that room had already moved on.

“Greg. It’s me. What the hell are you doing?” I asked.

He stared at me blankly. I’ve heard of a thousand yard stare before, but it wasn’t something I’d ever thought I’d see in person.

“What are you doing?” Stacy asked.

“That might be Greg in there,” I said. “If there’s any part of him in there he can tell us what happened to him.”

“I don’t think that’s happening,” Stacy said. “Look at him. He’s checked out.”

He might be checked out, but he did acknowledge Stacy. His eyes moved to her every time she spoke, and that was worth a shiver.

He wasn’t supposed to be able to see ghosts.
